Historic Belfast

Originally occupied since the Bronze Age, Belfast was officially established in 1613 and quickly grew as an industrial port. It became known for its linen production, which it traded to the West Indies and America, and helped develop the town’s infrastructure.

Belfast was granted city status by Queen Victoria in 1888, and in 1921 became the capital of Northern Ireland. In 1932 the devolved parliament became seated in Stormont, a set of imposing Edwardian buildings situated on the east side of the city.

Getting around Belfast is a breeze with its comprehensive train and bus network, and the city is served by two airports: George Best Belfast City Airport and Belfast International Airport, both less than 20 miles from the city centre.
