Visiting Chester

Combining rich history with a modern, vibrant feel, choosing to visit Chester is a wise move. Not only is the city close to the North Wales border, but it also sits within easy reach of regional hubs like Liverpool and Manchester. With so much to see and do here, it is a fantastic place to visit from anywhere in the UK.

When choosing to visit Chester, you will find a wide range of things to do. A trip to the famous 'Grosvenor Hotel' in the city centre for afternoon tea is always a highlight, for example. If you really want to splash out, you can even stay in one of its luxurious rooms during your visit!

The truth is that Chester is packed full of swish places to eat and lively bars to drink. From the best pizza at 'Sergio's' or 'Bella Italia' to trying out fancy cocktails in 'The Botanist', you will never be short of choice. The shopping in Chester is also superb, with a nice mixture of well-known brands and independent shops.

If you visit Chester when the horse racing is on, a day out at the city's famed racecourse is worthwhile. As with most of Chester's delights, the racecourse is in the city centre for easy access. There is also the 127-foot majesty of Chester Cathedral on St Werburgh Street to take in when here. The close ties Chester has to ancient Rome are also worth exploring - whether via a walk around the city's famous walls or a visit to the perfectly preserved amphitheatre.

Chester's history in brief

Chester began life as the Roman fortress 'Deva Victrix' under Emperor Vespasian in 79 A.D. It continued to grow throughout Medieval times after the Roman's had left Britain. It is during this time that the city became known as Chester.

Playing a key role in the Industrial Revolution of the 18th Century, the city has cemented its place as a major UK destination in modern times.
